Victoria Hall, Saltaire: You could not get more Yorkshire than this

Hayley and Mike first got in touch back in January 2021. They had a true ‘Yorkshire’ plan for their wedding, focusing on local suppliers and, obviously, being a Yorkshire wedding photographer I’d ticked that box. It helped that they also loved the alternative, fun style of my photography and weren’t big fans of posing too much.

They’re from a picturesque little post-industrial hamlet called Saltaire, nestled in the valleys of West Yorkshire, it’s United Nations World Heritage site – which provides some insight into how beautiful the place is – and home to Sir Titus Salt’s Mill and associated town. When they asked if I would like to do the engagement shoot there too, I jumped at the chance.

The engagement shoot was great, a relaxed wander, a drink at their local, and a few photos in some key places – along with my taking copious mental notes of where would be good on their wedding day.

Fast forward a few months and I was back in Saltaire. Hayley and Mike had chosen the distinguished Victoria Hall to host their wedding. It’s a Wes Anderson fan’s dream with muted pastel walls, grand staircases, a huge ballroom, floor to ceiling windows and a gym that cries out for photos with it’s oddly symmetrical layout. Not only that, it’s right in the centre of Saltraire, surrounded by history, classic row terraces and sandstone mill buildings. The mix of greenery, hills and industrial sandstone could not be more Yorkshire.
